Today is my 41st Birthday! Wow, When did I get to be in my 40's? I have been working with the scrapbooking materials that I won from Scrapadapadoo and playing. Planning on a few special cards today then I am done and am going to move on! I have a project that I am excited to work on at the Scrapbook Boot Camp this weekend at The Salvation Army Kroc Center in CDA. Just need tons of Adhesive.

Here is the completed project inspired by Mary Gunn Funn a fellow CTMh Consultant. Check out her cool ongoing project for 2012. Love the colors of the Dreamin Kit.

During the New Years Bash sponsered by Following the Paper Trail, The ScrapBeach, and Scrapadabdoo.com I won two prizes. A class kit from Laura Denison at Following the Paper Trail. A Hall Pass Kit-to be completed later! and also a Create Your Own Journal Kit from Scrapadabadoo. I worked with that kit today! It included a 4.5X6.5 journal with Kraft Color Chipboard Covers, 8 Sheets of 12X12 Kaisercraft-Dancing Jewel Collection, 15 brads from the collections, and Hideaway Rub-ons. Hi everyone and Happy New Year.

This year I made a decision to do what I loved more and worry about the things that I have little or no control over less. (OK so maybe I wont worry less but I can try).

Since late October I have been on a crafting mission. I made many gifts for Christmas 2011 out of my paper stash and learned a ton from Laura Denison at http://followingthepapertrail.blogspot.com/ and my projects using her patterns and kits are amazing! Everyone loved them.

I have also been creating a bit on my own as well. I have a multi-class workshop that will start at the end of January 2012 creating a 12X12 school year album for PK-12th grade. It was inspired by my Friend Kara at the last Scrapbook Retreat in Northeastern Washington. I will have dates, project information, and times posted after I return from our Winter Scrapbook Retreat which is next weekend.

For now I have a project to share that shows how to use the Rock the Block Promotion from Close to My Heart that is available until January 31st, 2012 for $15 with a $25 qualifying purchase on my website: http://gerriannarmstrong.myctmh.com/ or will be available without the exclusive stamp set February 1st, 2012 for $14.95 + tax & shipping.

I was inspired by a blog post from the Graphic 45 Design Team and fell in love with this from Sherry Cheever: http://g45papers.typepad.com/graphic45/2011/12/friday-dec-30th-blog-petaloo-sherry-tara-yuka.html

She made her version out of wood, cutting and sanding, and carving her stand. I fell in love and knew I could create something similar out of chipboard and the wonderful Wings Paper (Retired-CTMH) that I have had in my stash. So after some help from my wonderful husband (Thanks Hunny!) I had some dimensions and a plan to start creating the project. Many who know me know that I am a super fast crafter but this project took me almost a week to get it just the way that I wanted it to be! So without further ado here is my monthly perpetual calendar:

I will be putting together a class kit for my customers using the brand new Lucy Paper Collection at the End of January which will include a cutting guide and step by step directions-sorry due to CTMH policy: I am unable to sell the cutting guide and step by step directions without the class kit however this will be my first Live Ustream show on January 29th, 2012 at 1:00 PST at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/gerriann-s-scrapbooking-show . It will be my very first show so please be kind and patient! :)

It was super fun to create..yep those are the rock the block blocks...they take color amazingly well and without ink streaking. The boxes at the bottom are 100% hand made and the letters and numbers are cut out using the Exclusive Art Philosophy Collection.

I will be posting a list of supplies needed to complete this project.

I look forward to hearing from you and having you join me as we create this fun project.

Where did half a year go? Things have been so busy around here. Mostly things with Mr. H have been going AMAZINGLY WELL. I hvae been creating and selling some of my creations at Olive It! Cafe here in Spokane. I am in the process of getting my classes up and going.

Schools Out for Summer!

After a crazy year for us School is finally out for summer! It is amazing how many things that Harrison learned this year and just how much further he came this year than every other year we have been participating in Special Education Services. Next year we have decided to repeat Kindergarten and not take any Special Education Services so that Harrison will not have to be in a self-contained classroom with only other disabled peers. We believe that all kids should be educated with thier peers while meeting their special needs regarding the academics. SO to all the kids who were in Harrisons Classroom this year...THANK YOU Harrison did great because you all did great!!!!

Cupcake Gift Box

I purchased a template from Inking Idaho to make this cute cupcake box. I am excited to finally show it to you. It is amazing how much time goes into to dealing with the education system when you have a speical needs child. That really cut into my creative juices, but schools out for summer tomorrow. I cant wait until my little guy is home for 9 1/2 weeks!

I love to purchase kits and then make them mine in terms of design! I love templates too! Here is a great Bo Bunny Kit that only took about 1.5 hours to complete uninterrputed. Remember when getting a Bo Bunny kit to write down all the measurements for each piece of paper you are using first and then to cut the biggest piece of paper first! What a Wild Few Months!

Sorry I have not posted in a while. It has been a crazy ride with the School District. As many know that my son has Autism. As I share more and more of our story with people it has become apparent that people dont realize that there are still school districts that practice "Mainstreaming"-letting children visit the typical developing kids in the general education classroom but not fully including them or making it manadtory that the general educaiton teacher to plan or program for kids with disabilites. Children with disabilites need to be fully included with non-disabled peers. Not only because it is what is best for children with disabilites but because it truly is what is best for the non-disabled kids too! They are all our future and with 1 in 150 children (1 in 90 boys) learning to work together needs to be taught early. OK-I am off my soap box now!

Went on a scrapbooking weekend and completed a ton of paper crafting projects. Check back in the next few days as I will try to get something posted each day!

Call for Action- Washington State Residents

I found that this was a wonderful piece about behavioral intervention in children with Autism and how setting boundaries early and understanding that obsessions are hard to break if we allow them to become out of control. We have to pick our battles however it is nice to see that there are programs that are in development and in practice that will help a family to deal with the issues of home life.

WAA is working hard to get private insurance companies to cover therapy costs that work in get children ready for adulthood (up to $50,000 a year until age 21). If you get a chance to call let the legislators know that you are a friend of our family and that Harrison is a wonderful guy who needs intensive therapy not covered by private insurance because he turned 6 in December and the insurance company no longer covers private therapy-(my personal 2 cents) because they think that this type of therapy can be done completely at the public school level- not so or fair to assume. You are welcome to use Harrison as your example and share with the following legislators who you are in relationship to Harrison. Yes, I am his grandmother, teacher, therapist, aunt, caregiver, friend of the family, Harrison’s friend. I am giving you permission and will sign a release if you need one. Please just make the call in the next 48 hours and I will sign it when I see you next. It is really important to us! Thank you!

Now…what you need to know to call the legislators and why it is important for them to hear from you too!

Shayan's Law (SB 5203) is so important to thousands of families across Washington, as it would require insurance companies to provide coverage of up to $50,000 per year for autism treatments and therapies.

We need your help today to reach out to Senator Karen Keiser, the chair of the Senate Health and Long-Term Care Committee, to call for a vote on Shayan's Law.

CD book Construction Instructions:
1. Score the 5” X 12” Sweetleaf Cardstock at 5, 5 ½, 6, 6 ½, 7, 7 ½, and 8. Slip the now accordion folded CS in CD Album centering the accordion fold in the spine of the CD Album. Secure with Adhesive.
2. Create the 6 pages using the Sweetleaf CS 4 ¾ X 4 ¾ as your bases.
3. Once pages are completed then apply redline tape to the accordion fold and to the opposite backside of the complete page.
4. Adhere pages to accordion folds.
5. Using the “Sigh” 5 X 5 square adhere to the front inside over of the CD Album with adhesive.
6. Using the “Sigh” 3 7/8 X 5 adhere to the front of the back inside pocket folding the extra paper inside the pocket.

Birthday Present for Barbie Lover!!

I made this clothing storage/organizer for a girl in DS class at school for her birthday. She turned 6. Her mom loved it. I am sure that you wont believe it either but I could not find any Barbie wrapping paper anywhere I spent 3 days looking for it. I wanted to cover the box with it. So I had to settle with some outfits from a paperdoll book that the neighbor found for me as everyone was looking for the wrapping paper in thier closets. DS classmate loved the box and since she recieved a few new Barbie outfits with accessories I am sure that it will be used.

The box is from Creative Imaginations. Love them. The tag is a tag from the CTMH Brag and Tag Album stamped with watermelon and bubblegum ink. CTMH Believe alphabet, outlined with black legacy writers. It was a fun project.

DS went to a second birthday party this weekend. I made a really cute play area for her littlest petshop animals and polly pockets. I will try to get that posted in the next few days! Enjoy!

I love Aaron Browns blog (www.aaronsbooth32.blogspot.com) and a few weeks ago she posted a great little card kit. I had so much fun making this kit for a lady who made slippers for my son for Christmas. It was so much. I used the Valenintes Bo Bunny paper and also my cuttle bug for the embossed die cut heart. It is so brite and pretty! I love it.

Aaron has some really cute templates that she is selling for Operation Smile. I love the one with the little drawers. I have a project with that template that I will post soon!

December came and went in berms of snow and snow days from school. Harrison turned 6 years old. It is really good for the routine to be back to normal again.

I have been teaching at A Stamp 4 All (www.astamp4all.com) and loving it! I have loved meeting everyone and hanging out with them. I have been creating and collecting supplies too! So here are a few projects to share with you. I hope to be able to update my blog a few days per week. At least that is my goal.

It is with a sad heart that I will be resigning as a consultant with Close to My Heart effective immediately. I love the company, products, friendships, and all the wonderful blessings that my involvement has been with Close To My Heart and the Stamping Tweekers Teams.

There are some truly bright things in my family’s future. My son has started Kindergarten in an Integrated All Day Kindergarten Class where he is very successful.

I have also joined the staff as a Volunteer Parent Advocate for Families Together for People with Disabilities. I finally feel that I am able to help other families through the hidden paths of social services to get the things that they need to provide opportunities for an independent successful life for their loved one.

Taking time for my family and those things that are dear to my heart is the one great blessing that comes from moving forward.

Oh Joy Mini Album

I have been trying for 3 days to get Blogger to take my photos. Finally this evening they are finally working.

I know that it has been forever since I last posted. I have been busy. I never thought that having a kindergartener would take so much time. We are settled into the Intergrated Kindergarten Class and Harrison is doing well.

This is a card from my upcoming Christmas Card Class in November. I used a template posted by another consultant using the Evensong Paper Pack. Enjoy the photos and I hope to get a few more up in the next day or two.

Well I sure did over do it. I have a superficial blood clot in my leg that if we had not caught it could have become a DVT. So anyone who knows me will tell you these just kill me and put me out of commision for at least a week if not longer. So I have done nothing but lay on the couch since Saturday evening. My dear friend Suzanne shared a therapy stocking with me so at least I can walk on it if I have to. The pain meds make me tired and it is so hard to keep track of a busy little guy by yourself in this state. I know that staying off of it and keeping it elevated with speed the recovery. So that is what I plan on doing for the next week or so!

I am planning a scrapbook bingo with a few of my customers and other consultants so for those of you I will be calling you to let you know the details.

Good thing we have a laptop and wireless access so that at least I can do some business things!

On Friday after I left to go to Stamp Camp the mailman arrived with a package from my Secret Sister. My husband called my UL and since she was coming up on Saturday Night she brought my package which included the Family Word Bloom, some dew drops in colors I did not have, and some CTMH buttons that I did not have either. I was determined to work on this album and this is the results. I used the Free Spirit Paper Pack from CTMH. Thanks again Secret Sister I love the book. Oh I used my Bind It All to bind the book-So Awesome!

Stamp Camp Results!

I finally had a moment to take some photos of the creations from Stamp Camp. It was a four day weekend where on Friday I sorted layouts without photos (you know that you have them too) and photos without layouts (yes it was about 8 boxes-of various stages of fullness) to have them meet. I got a ton of photos on layouts and photos set aside for my siblings. Then on Sunday and Monday I was determined to do a couple of cute mini albums. So that is where we are now... This is the cute file folder album that I made (lifted ideas from my DL Tony) using the new Game On paper pack form CTMH.

CREATE! I made these cards this morning as I was wide awake at 3 AM! Enjoy!

The first card is for my MIL for her birthday using the InkyDoodle Sketch for the weekend. A little different but the basics are the same.

The second card is my version of the card puzzler card for this month. I added the scrap paper for a leaf, ribbon, safety pin, and the stamped image and sentiment. I like how it turned out! Hopefully Jennifer M will too!

The third Card is the for the Stamping Bella SCS Challenge #28 both the sketch and Color Challenges. I love this card!

The fourth card is also a Stamping Bella SCS challenge #27 both the sketch and the color challenges. Colors are a bit wild but pretty and for my aunt for her birthday!

The last card is for Beates Weekend challenge. Again my sentiment is not the right size but I loved this paper and sentiment from Cosmo Cricket!

Giant Step Forward!

Have you ever felt like you had to prove to the world that you were not crazy or being unrealistic about your child's abilities? That is exactly how we have been feeling this past month, thus the long blog break!

We have been working on kindergarten placement for Harrison for next year. Our IEP Team was not on the same page as we are about the reasons for wanting Harrison in an integrated or regular kindergarten class. They believed because of their "testing" and "observations" that Harrison was not "ready" and would get so far behind, then get frustrated, and finally become a behavior problem. Let me tell you I saw red when that came out! My son has never been a behavior problem (he is the most compliant-overly at times- child that many have worked with).

Yesterday we had our transition meeting from pre-school to kindergarten. The feel of the meeting was that the school was right and we were just over stretching Harrison abilities. The teachers and team did say some positive things however the "can't do, and the wont performs" were a much longer list. At one point in the meeting I started doubting what I knew to be true about my son.

The format of the meeting went something like this: (a good way to work one in my opinion)
1. The Team Arrives: Bring a man with you, the tone of the meeting really does change when you have a man with you even if they are only there for support. THIS IS IMPORTANT!!!!

2. Introductions-who is everyone, and how are they connected to your child, how are they talking to you. What does your gut say about this person, you know your child best does it appear to be the type of person who your child will respond to?

3. Where is the child currently and how did they get there-If you are paying or participating in private therapy then make sure that you get it out at that time. My son can do many things in private therapy that the team was saying that he could not because of his short attention span and focus issue (That is called Autism right?). This is where the discussion regarding the distracting environment came in-his disability makes it hard to focus and what better place to learn to focus than in that type of environment with peers. This really opened the door for a regular general ed kindergarten for us.

The team also stated that they did not consider the transition to this program and his progress successful and tried to blame it on me that I pushed and the district complied with my request. I reminded them that I am a member of the team and that the entire team from our previous placement felt it was a good move for him.

Do not let the district pin something on you that you asked for that they feel is not working. Do not take TOTAL RESPONSIBILITY for the decision you asked and the TEAM AGREED. Stand up and lay the blame right back in the entire teams lap!

4. Overview of IEP Goals and Objectives-this is hard but just let the team talk and tell you what is happening currently. If you don't have your child in regular ed or with typical developing peers and want that to happen make sure that the communication goals and the learning goals include the words "typical distracting classroom" or something similar. How do you practice these skills if you are not around a bit of distracting and interesting things?

5. THIS IS THE IMPORTANT ONE: Make a list of what type of Environment your child needs to learn in! Make sure to include thing that are important to you and you feel will make a difference in his learning.

Our list looked something like this:
A Class Placement that Includes:
-Small Group instruction-Environment that provides opportunities to practice new skills
-Typical Developing Peers
-Strong Teacher with a solid, set routine
-One to One support as needed
(OK you get the idea these were the ones that were the most important to us but there were 7-8 on the list)

6. After this is done then talk about placement. Because we have a district that has pilot project that provides opportunities for children with IEP's who may be right on the edge an opportunity to be placed in regular general education we felt that this was the best opportunity for our son. We made a comparison between the current preschool placement (which we view as extremely successful socially-academically they are right not so much- but that was not what we were looking for when we moved him) and that because the district had a program similar for kindergarten we would like to continue that environment.

They tried everything they could to "make us see" that we were setting up Harrison to "fail" however when everything that was said and done they could not make a good case as to why Harrison could not be successful in the program we felt would benefit him most.

7 Finally only sign off on the placement if you are really willing to accept that decision. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO SIGN IT AT ALL!!! The district has to provide you with a letter stating where placement will be within 10 business days (in our district) and then you have to start the paper trail process for requesting a reconsideration of that decision and go through "Due Process" and use your "Procedureal Safeguards" to make sure that your child gets what they need to make education progress.

Just a few more details : I started voiceing my desire for kindergarten placement in January of this year and did get the run around. I did get a chance to visit the intergrated kindergarten classroom and talk to the teacher about her style and how well students do in this environment. I asked her questions about her background in working with children with autism and she was able to tell me about the accomidations that she had made for some of the children with picture schedules right on the desks in the beginning of the year.

My GUT (yes listen to yours too) said this is the place that my son could be successful and a teacher like this could tell me when to step back and what she needed me do or have done in private therapy to help Harrison be successful!

I finally feel like we can now finish up this school year and enjoy the excitement with all the other families who have children going to kindergarten this fall. It will be amazing, adventous, scary, exciting, and nerve racking but at least it will be our journey and one that we are ready to go on-well informed and supported.

Wow it is amazing how quickly time gets away from you. It is spring break here and getting my son settled for Kindergarten has taken most of my time the past few weeks. For those who may not understand, when you have a disabled child then sometimes it feels like all you do is put out fires and when you learn that someone is not being honest about what is available or your idea is not what "they" think is best boy people can drag thier feet.

Anyway... April is Autism Awareness Month. I will have an auction set up on Ebay by the end of the weekend to Benefit Families Together (www.familiestogether.com) which includes 20+ one page layouts featuring a CARS Theme. These are perfect for the little guys in your life that love the little cars and the movie. I will post a link once I get everything photographed and the auction listed on Ebay.

I love my Husband!-Kitchen Story

I just wanted to say that I really, really, really love him!

For Christmas this year my parents decided to help with the remodel of the kitchen. We live in a 1940's built home with little remodeling done to it. The story starts that my wonderful son smashed a overipe avacado into the super horrible carpet (yes carpet in the kitchen in September 2007) and since we were trying to decided on the best way to get the floor redone my husband started ripping up the carpet just in the spot where the avacodo was. That did not last. The entire carpet came out and oh the smells....

So fast forward a bit and my dad comes by and sees the kitchen and asks when we are going to get going on it. Anyone with a special needs child will tell you that there are just so many other expenses that you do without for quite a while.

So for our Christmas Presents this year our parents both chipped in to help with the kitchen remodel. My parents provided the floor, countertop and dishwasher (yes a built in one) and my husbands parents provided the brand new sink and faucet and plumbing stuff!

Our previous sink had the faucet off on one side coming out of the wall and it did not even reach the second sink. Now we have an extra deep stainless steele sink and faucet that reaches both of the sinks! It was a dream come true. The counter, sink and dishwasher went in before Christmas with the promise of the floor to go in after we painted.

We did that about 3 weeks ago. We did it too- we did not make Harrison do it all but he really wanted to help and why not in your jammies?

So today was the day for the floor. My husband did an amazing job. Even the transition pieces are in... We still have to finish painting the trim and get wooden baseboard but I can finally after months of not being able to walk into the kitchen barefoot or without slippers without hard soles I have the most gorgous floor to walk barefoot of if I want to! Just see! If you got this far make sure to leave a message for my husband to tell him what a great job he did! I am on top of the world.

The flu is behind me just now working on getting rid of the cough and the runny nose! But I feel so much better! I am glad that I have a doctor who listens! Yeah!

My Dh took my DS and I to the doctor this morning and I am relieved that he was able to give me something to help my immune system deal with this flu. The cough is the worst -just hurts to breathe deeply cause a cough will come- but some RX cough medicinewill help to loosen everything and moisten the tissue to make it easier to cough in the next few days. He checked out my son and said yep hes got it to and started him on some medicine to shorten its life in him. I hope to see my craft room by the end of the weekend but I need to be so much better before next monday! Have a good weekend!

But when? I am so tired and I can hardly keep my eyes open very long! Luckly DH took the day off from work as DS is starting to get sick too in order to take us to the doctor-I am not a sit on the couch kind of person and boy does my house show it. Today over at SCS the Ways to Use it Challenge was to use music as your inspiration.

This has been the song in our house since Monster Jam only it is sung: "How Much is that 'Taz'zy in the Window?" after the Taz monster truck. So in honor of the tune I made this card. This is the Valance Card from the Origionals Program by CTMH.

I finally finished the Featured Stamper Challnge over at SCS. My card is a remake of her MFT card in her gallery for Breast Cancer Awareness. This is my card using Gina K.'s stamp set for autism awareness. I changed the stamps and the saying but the rest of the card is pretty much the same as Mary Jo Albrights! Let me know what you think!

One should never feel guilty about spending 2 weekends in a row papercrafting (scrapbooking, stamping, card marking etc) and not posting any of the wonderful new creations on your blog- YEAH Right!

I had a great time making some great cards. I made a mini album 9X9 that I will post once the photos are in it and also a 6X6 that is going to my sister-in-law who lost her bewloved kitty this weekend.

I will bore you no longer here is the goodies! Lots of SCS challenges and inspiration! Thanks everyone for sharing your lovely artwork. If I have recreated or taken your idea as a starting point consider yourself a master cardmaker because I loved your card so much I had to have one too!

I am so excited that I was asked to start a blog regarding our adventure of raising a child on the Autism Spectrum by the agency we have been working with.

I decided that it was a great idea and after chatting with my husband we decided it was a go. On that site we are hoping to get the word out about Autism and its effects on the immediate family as well as extended family and the community.

I am excited to be sharing our experience so that others who are overwhelmed, stressed out, fed-up, and plain out of ideas on what to do next can be inspired! The scrapbook Designer Diva challenge at SCS was to do a progressive page. This was a bit of a challenge because I have never scrapbooked in the 8.5X11 size.

In a progressive page you start with a 6X6 layout: The little frog is 3-d in that it has 3 layers. It is so cute!

Then create an 8.5x11 page using the 6X6 page:

Then finally to create a 12X12 page with both the 8.5X 11 and 6X6 pages: (with hidden tag)

Card Puzzler Swap Results Jan 2008

I was the hostess for Round #1 of the Card Puzzler Swap on the CTMH Consultant BB. For those of you who do not know what that means is the hostess makes a card and then only sends the pieces (no bases) of the card including stamped images to the other players. Each player gets enough pieces to make a card for the hostess and one for themselves and trys to complete the card very similar to the hostesses. I loved this card layout when I saw it on a stampers blog so the sketch for this card is not mine! (Sorry cant remember who you were)
